This substack we’re giving you a sneak preview from the second thrilling installment of SolarPunk Detective “Innocent as Doves”
Alejandra got to a deck hatch and wrenched it open. A blast of briney fresh air hit her in the face as well as the acrid smell of smoke.
One of the Guadalajara’s building-sized sails soared above her into the night sky making loud snapping sounds as it whipped back and forth.
Computer sailing must have failed, she thought, as the graphenated canvas was flailing uncontrolled in the wind.
She made her way to the side of the ship. Large shards of glossy blue glass crunched under her boots from the remnants of shattered solar that were strewn across the deck.
Looking down the vast metal bulk of the Guadalajara she saw explosions had blown out the hull from the inside.
Flames were running up the next set of sails to the stern casting a hellish dance of light and shadows across the ship. It was listing badly and she assumed it must be sinking.
Alejandra heard a crackle behind as someone’s foot stepped on broken solar. She spun round in a defensive stance ready to fight.
